New Project
TECHO PROPIO, Ambato

The new project is located in a suburban zone near Ambato, just 15 minutes in bus, in the rural area near Ambato. Is an isolated neighborhood, as an small village. It name is Techo Propio that means “0wn roof” and is a Cooperative created 17 years ago. The cooperative helps very poor people to buy their piece of land and construct a house by a self construction system.
The total capacity of the projects is for 1800 families. For the moment are 1200 families living there, 3500 inhabitants. Most are still constructing their house after many years. Parents are most dedicated to work in the streets of Ambato as street vendors. For them this has been the only opportunity in life to have a house. Most are very poor but ther are an small portion of people with better economic conditions and good homes. There are also many problems in each family, alcoholism, family violence, prostitution, unemployement, and many health problems, some adults with serious illness.
There are in the neigborhood two primary schools, a nursery for smaller children, only one playground yard for all children of the community, an small police station, a football soccer camp, a church.
The agreement was signed with the Cooperative Techo Propio and has a duration of two years, extendable to two years more. The agreement was made with the following objectives:
To create a Computers Centre Andrew Finch where will be courses for children, youth and adults. The Computer Center will be very useful as there are many people who want to learn or improve their computer knowledge. The Computer Center will be just for teaching. The cooperative gave us a completely independent room in the same building for their offices.
Creating a VDO children's library in which the children can get books and have reading workshops and art classes. Inhabitants of Techo Propio are very happy with the computer center Andrew Finch and the library as it is the first time they will have these services.
To make the design and drawings of the community house (as an small coliseum for sports and general meetings of the community) and help in its construction with volunteers. Also for the future market.
To help children from poorest families through the Taitakuna sponsorship program.
